We like to have our cake, and eat it too. This is probably why you won’t see any of us competing in the Crossfit Games during ESPN2’s late night programming anytime soon. Where you WILL catch us though, is at events like the recent high-performance driving event at Palm Beach International Raceway, put on by our friend Tony and the crew at The HPDE.
Tony arranged for PBIR’s kart track to be re-commissioned for the night as a speedy, yet technical autocross course. For the uninitiated (which honestly is what, maybe two of you?), an autocross is a short, makeshift racetrack normally defined by a few orange cones and some brave volunteer corner workers. The idea is to drive your car as hard as possible through the various cut-backs, decreasing apex turns, and slaloms found on the course.

It’s just like your typical short and intense workout of the day – only during your downtime, you can wander over and snag a hot dog from the track-side kitchen without feeling guilty.

At this past event, we were blown away by the variety of cars and participants that showed up – some were clearly seasoned vets…others not so much. There were more than a few BMWs taking their turns through the cones or over at the full-size road course – but we also saw a strong showing of Subarus, Hondas, a stock Volvo, and even a classic Corvette.

Everyone who made it out seemed to have a great time, which isn’t necessarily something everyone can claim after ~1,800 burpees. The crowd was light enough that everyone was allowed to attack the course as many times as they – or their cars – could handle it.

The only thing that would have made it better is cake. We’ve already put in a request for the upcoming June 27th event – if you’re local, definitely check it out!
