Passion? Obsession? Addiction?
These words may sound a bit strong to the average person. Negative, even. However, between ourselves and Precision Sport Industries, we like to believe we give obsessive compulsive disorder a good name.
We honestly can’t help ourselves. The stainless steel shine of our hand-welded exhausts? Our reputation. The decimals on the dyno sheet? Our business. Without this perfectionist attitude and attention to detail, we’d be just another result on a Google search page.
When it comes to your BMW, you may experience a certain amount of OCD as well. We get it. You should expect top quality products and service. You should expect in a word…precision.
And when it comes to trusting your neighborhood performance tuning shop, our money is on the one with “Precision” right in it’s name.
Over the years, Precision Sport Industries has become one of our most trusted dealers. Based in Winter Park, FL. the PSI crew has made a name for themselves across the country…thanks in part to one guy some of you may have heard of: Mr. Chelsea Denofa.
While that signature purple and gold color scheme might be instantly recognizable even behind a cloud of tire smoke, the story of PSI isn’t as widely known. So, we asked RC, Sean, and the rest of the team to step into our office, have a seat on the couch, and take some time to reflect.
How Did PSI Get It’s Start In The BMW-Tuning Industry?
In 2008 we had a small personal shop, and we began realizing that our hobby was more than a hobby. One thing we knew for sure, was that we did not trust other people with our cars to be done the “right way”. Also, friends had begun to ask our advice about their BMWs, and bringing us their personal cars to work on and install parts. What started as several side projects turned into a full-fledged business by late 2008, and PSI has been growing ever since.
How Long Have You Been Working With Active Autowerke?
Right out of the gate, we began working with Active Autowerke, as they were not only close as far as physical location, but also close in terms of how we viewed quality automotive work. Their products have been a mainstay in BMW tuning for decades now, and we believed in them enough to make them one of our first partners in the early years of PSI.
What Is Your Favorite Part Of Working In This Industry?
Our favorite aspect of working in the automotive industry has to be the people, the scene and the love of the BMW marque. Without the people, we would not be where we are today, and the caliber of enthusiasts we have met along the way is truly humbling. The simple enjoyment of getting together with other car fans and chatting about the passion we share is not to be underestimated, and if it were possible, we would open a shop simply for that purpose. Our mutual love for what we do and the common ground of so many of our clients and friends keeps us motivated and ready to serve every day.
What Sets PSI Apart From Other Performance Shops?
At PSI, we have a true enthusiast background and love for BMW. One of the shop owners has a collection of BMWs starting with an E30 M3 up through the latest M3. This true love for BMW can be seen in every build and project we complete. While we also have items available for sale and services we offer, we realized some time ago that it is not the WHAT that truly matters in business, it is the WHY. This difference, we believe, is the catalyst that propels a great business and also the stumbling block over which lesser companies will fall. If you are simply out to make money, you might make some, but eventually your lack of a true WHY will reveal itself.
You’re Well-Known For Your Project Vehicles. Which One From The Years Has Been Your Favorite?
Our favorite project has to be the Matte DTM E30 M3 we built. This had a decidedly vintage feel to it, and for good reason, as it was based on the Kurt Thiim 1988 DTM Race Car. We did an S52 swap with OBD1 conversion, plus a lot of custom work, including tuning by Active Autowerke. Needless to say, it turns a lot of heads!
Tell Us A Little Bit About Your Relationship With Active Autowerke, And Our Products On Your BMWs.
It’s no secret that Active Autowerke makes some very impressive parts and kits, but to us the E46 M3 Renegade Kit really stands out. Nearly tripling the RWHP on the S54 engine is incredible in-and-of itself, but the sheer durability and reliability when installed is what really caught us off guard. It shouldn’t have – AA would not have it any other way – but bringing that much power to the table on a consistent basis is just amazing.
One of our latest E92 AA Stage 2 M3 builds is our favorite, but all have gone virtually without a hitch. For that particular car, we simply fell in love with how each corresponding modification fit with the AA Stage 2 supercharger kit, including aesthetics, sound, and feel. What we ended up with was an intimidating yet charming beast.
What Can Everyone Expect From PSI In 2014, And Beyond?
The team here at PSI has a great many builds on the way featuring AA products. Highlights include heritage BMW models such as a complete 2002 restoration, all the way up to the new M3 and M4 models, which we can’t wait to get our hands on.
